In this must-have for anyone who wants to better understand their love life, a mathematician pulls back the curtain and reveals the hidden patterns—from dating sites to divorce, sex to marriage—behind the rituals of love.

The roller coaster of romance is hard to quantify; defining how lovers might feel from a set of simple equations is impossible. But that doesn’t mean that mathematics isn’t a crucial tool for understanding love.

Love, like most things in life, is full of patterns. And mathematics is ultimately the study of patterns—from predicting the weather to the fluctuations of the stock market, the movement of planets or the growth of cities. These patterns twist and turn and warp and evolve just as the rituals of love do.

In
The Mathematics of Love, Dr. Hannah Fry takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the patterns that define our love lives, applying mathematical formulas to the most common yet complex questions pertaining to love: What’s the chance of finding love? What’s the probability that it will last? How do online dating algorithms work, exactly? Can game theory help us decide who to approach in a bar? At what point in your dating life should you settle down?

From evaluating the best strategies for online dating to defining the nebulous concept of beauty, Dr. Fry proves—with great insight, wit, and fun—that math is a surprisingly useful tool to negotiate the complicated, often baffling, sometimes infuriating, always interesting, mysteries of love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A smart, snappy guide to romance that dips into mathematical models…On-screen and on the page, Fry has a wry, chatty voice that illuminates age-old questions in brainy yet simple language.” ― Washington Post

The book covers a broad range of mathematical topics at a level that is approachable for most people with some minor math background, but it also has great relationship advice. The author does a great job of teasing out useful insights from otherwise sexist research in many instances as well which I appreciate.

One thing even a non-mathematician will agree upon, human behavior is a function of many factors. This book is simply and effectively a mathematician's attempt to describe such human behaviors in the form of mathematical expressions consisting of equations with coefficients, variables and constants. Nicely written and effectively explained.

Light and fun, the book provides entertaining examples of how mathematical thinking can be applied to pursuit, courtship, and even planning weddings. I would have liked to have seen more actual math or deeper analyses. But, still, it was a kick to read about how math can be used in this unexpected space and the research going on. I had a great time speaking with teenagers in my carpool and in my volunteer tutoring about it, hopefully waking them up to new ways of thinking about math.

The name of the book is not appropriately chosen for the content. as the author mentions in the preface the book is only about useful applications of mathematics in any romantic relationship from the start to the end of marriage. it doesn't add any knowledge about love to the reader or help the reader to have a better comprehension of love even through the eyes of a mathematician.
As I am finally an engineer, all in all I am happy that I read the book because it helped me to find well defined solutions for more decision making problems.

Wow, for any intellectual who wants to look at dating from a different perspective, this book does a very, very good job of weaving complex theories in math, economics, and even psychology into the world of dating. The author definitely gets kudos for her job with her explanation of Nobel-prize winning ideas and relating them to the average person in the context of dating.

Girls, this book explains (mathematically) why you're on the losing end of the stick if you don't approach guys. Guys, it is our privilege, not our burden to be the gender that does the approaching.

Nice easy read, and some interesting mathematical insights. The younger you are, the more time to implement some of these statistical facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein großartiges kleines Buch
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2015
Absolut top!

This is something incredible for for those who love mathematics and wanna go deep inside its applications in real life scenarios. This would also break the ice for those who sometimes find most of the higher Mathematics irrelevant and useless. Read it and you will fall in love with Mathematics.
